I think you may be confusing 'to stay' in the sense of 'not go away' and the sense of 'go somewhere for a time'. Tres estudiantes se quedaron ....

I thought my sentence used the word in the same way as the example about Rome... ?? And what is the difference between "stay in the sense of 'not go away'" and "in the sense of go somewhere for a time", because I don't think I get the latter.....
