No en lo que te conviene

Hola a todos,

La frase en cuestión es del libro Cuenta contigo de Patricia Ramírez Loeffler.

Tienes talento, pero no crees en ti. No es la falta de talento lo que te limita, sino la idea de que no eres capaz. Y con esta idea creces pero no te desarrollas, o por lo menos no lo haces en la dirección en la que a ti te gustaría.

Todos tenemos uno o varios talentos, pero las circunstancias de la vida a veces nos llevan a abandonarlos en pro de la responsabilidad y del deber. El talento está en lo que te apasiona, no en lo que te conviene, a pesar de que en esta vida tenemos que ocuparnos muchas veces de esto último. Pero eso no implica olvidar de por vida aquello que se te da bien y que, además, disfrutas haciéndolo.

Si no hacemos triunfar el talento es como si no lo tuviéramos. El éxito no está en ser excepcional, sino en hacer las cosas de forma excepcional.

I'm not sure what the author means when she says "no en lo que te conviene." If "convenir" means suit (be suitable/convenient), isn't it a bit strange, because it implies that you have consciously decided not to pursue something you have a talent for - as if what you have talent for doesn't suit you. Shouldn't it be "no en lo que tienes que hacer" in place of "no en lo que te conviene"?

She's emphasizing that what you're passionate about is your talent, rather than what suits you. Having a talent for what suits you isn't out of the question; in fact, she goes on to say that this is typically the case. At the end of the paragraph she encourages doing what you are good at and what you enjoy doing.
