This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for July 25, 2009
colmena (feminine noun (la)) — hive, beehive. Look up colmena in the dictionary Arrojé una piedra a una colmena de abejas y corrí. I threw a rock at a beehive and ran.

"Colmena" is enough, you don't need add "de abejas". For wasps "nido" is used: un nido de avispas.
Dicen que las abejas en enjambre no pican, pero yo no me fío  La Colmena es una obra de Camilo José Cela, premio Nobel.
