I can give you my own opinion above, the definition of the oration Aguantar el empuje, I believe, you can use the sentence when you are doing something some hard work or something that could require much endeavor, or a whole work where you need more help of someone, for example, I am fixing four equipment of compute, but I can't finish all the computer today, but my boos needs the computer fixed at afternoon, then in a moment of my whole calmness for my mind, I say ( Tengo que aguantar el empuje), or also you can use the expression when you are competency in a race car, if you are good running vehicles, then you will can be the number one, but if you have fear or fright in running some car, you in your own mind, you say, (Tengo que aguantar el empuje), I feel that the expression is a issue of literal expression, I don't know as you can use the word or that other possible kind of expression seem to this mentioned before, but I hope my answer can help you.
