Poner pena a la vida

How do you say this in English ? It means to prohibit sth more or less.

I'm having a hard time understanding what "poner/tener pena a la vida" really means, and I need to know what it means before translating it.

poner pena a la vida, es amenazar a alguien pero depende tambien del contexto. SI una madre dice me ha puesto pena a la vida mi hijo, es porque su hijo le dice que no haga ciertas cosas o no diga algo. Sin embargo si ya no es su hijo, quiere decir que su vida esta en peligro.
