Así como

I keep getting thrown off by "así como". For example, at the end of the following sentence,
"A casi seis meses de la muerte de el ex líder libio Muamar Gadafi, la televisión alemana presentó una investigación que revela la violación sexual sistemática de mujeres por el ex dictador, así como el temor que aún reina en Libia."

¿"...just as fear (that) still reigns in Libya."?

"Just as" just does fit well in my opinion, but how else could we translate that?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure it has an exact match. About "just as", I don't know because it's used in such a wide scope, but it could be that when "así como" is used in the sense of "del mismo modo que" for the sake of comparison.

In the text you quoted, "así como" is similar to "and also" or "as well", sort of an intermediate step between "and" and "both ... and ...", I mean, sort of a qualified "and" including a note about the second (or third, etc.) clause not being of lesser importance just because it is listed last or the fact it falls into a different category:

Llevaron

martillo y clavos

platos hondos, platos llanos/playos y copas/vasos

herramientas, vajilla, así como un botiquín de primeros auxilios incluyendo algunas medicinas.

Colloquially it's replaced by "y también", "y no hay que olvidarse de" or similar expressions.

Thank you. That helps a lot!

So, in the sentence which I quoted, is the meaning that the investigation ALSO revealed that fear still reigns in Libya? If so, that also threw me off.

Thanks again.

Yes. Though "also" is not the exact wording in the original, it's another way to say it approximately the same way.
