To a non-English speaker this may sound like a sympathetic response, and
in some contexts in can be. It, however, usually it is the opposite of
sympathic. It has turned into non-disguised pseudo-sympathy.
Is there a Spanish equivalent?

(Qué) lástima.
(Qué) pena.
(Intonation will tell whether it's a sympathetic or a sarcastic expression)
To underline sarcasm people can add a few words:
- Pues qué lástima/pena, ¿no?
- Uy/Huy qué lástima/pena, ¿verdad?.

Use Angélicas or the usual "qué pena me da". The intonation rules.

Tambien Oh what a shame puede ser sarcástica depende en el contexto
y tono. Too bad so sad es siempre sornoso.
