I got a message a while back from someone needing help with Spanish vocabulary associated with cockfighting (peleas de gallos). Some vocab. needed:
rooster - gallo
cockfight - pelea de gallos ?
gaffs (small knives strapped to the rooster's legs) - navajas?
spurs (fighting roosters usually have their spurs cut off) - espolones?
comb (feathers on the top of the head) - __________
If you know any of this vocabulary, or anything else that's relevant, I'd be appreciative.
David.
Of course, the Wikipedia entries provides some info, but not all the vocabulary.

Pelea de gallos (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelea_de_gallos)

rooster - gallo :good:
cockfight - pelea de gallos :good:
gaffs (small knives strapped to the rooster's legs) - navajas :good:
spurs (fighting roosters usually have their spurs cut off) - espolones :good:
comb (feathers on the top of the head) - cresta
Each translation you provided was correct, and I provided the word for 'comb.'
I am not at all familiar with the sport of cockfighting, but was able to find all the words on the Internet.

in other place
"Les quitaban las plumas, les amputaban la cresta, les limaban los espolones y les untaban el pecho con vinagre para que el tono rojizo les hiciera más atractivos. "

gallera - donde pelean los gallos
So that would be like cockpit (I think that's what it's called in English).

Thanks Rusty. It also appears (http://www.word-detective.com/082498.html) that the cockpit of an airplane is actually derived from this grisly "sport".

Es lo que mas llama la atención en los Palenques......la música y la Pelea de Gallos.
Its "grisly" as David says but I guess not anymore than Bullfighting.

In boxing, kick-fighting and wrestling, the contestants don't usually die. For this reason I can't get into bullfighting at all.

Boxing causes brain damage. Boxers get punchdrunk. They are exploited.
Cruelty to animals other than humans is hard to excuse, but cruelty to
humans seems even worse.

Thats some good information!
Is there a name for a person that trains the gallos? A person that trains them for the owner?
