CBS said on Friday that a federal immigration agent passed away in Long Beach California when, after opening fire on his office supervisor during an argument, a third agent shot him to defend _____ (my best guess is "the latter" but I think that's not quite right).

Thanks in advance.

Yes, "the latter".

In contexts where English uses the words "former" and "latter", Spanish frequently uses the demonstrative pronouns "este/éste" = "the latter" ("this one", the one most recently mentioned) and "aquel/aquél" ("that one", the one least recently mentioned), with appropriate agreement for gender and number.
