Try as I might, I cannot seem to get my head around the meaning of ponerle (o meterle) a alguien la tamborita, an expression which supposedly comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco. Can anyone help?

If it is of any help, tamborita (http://www.google.com/imgres?q=tamborita&hl=en&lr=&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=620&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=Rf16-ko65n2SQM:&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/77656442%40N00/5070857994/&docid=d-KcloA_SAciTM&itg=1&imgurl=http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4109/5070857994_690bc72a13_z.jpg&w=427&h=640&ei=kFCjT_OUKMKmiQLs68jXAw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=127&vpy=245&dur=1332&hovh=275&hovw=183&tx=117&ty=166&sig=110162225602450975485&page=2&tbnh=139&tbnw=117&start=18&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:18,i:131) is a musical instrument. :)

Can you make out the meaning?

@Glen: Do you have any context in which such expression is used?

As to context, different people have explained it to me at various times as meaning either

to play a trick on someone
to deceive someone
to slap or hit someone
to joke around with someone
to act romantic with someone

so I'm confused, but really like the sound of it and want to use it correctly. I appreciate any help!
