It's not idiomatic at all. I think they're saying he appeals too much to dirty humour instead of using more subtle scripts. I suppose it to relate to "el chiste de la sal gorda (http://www.maschistes.com/chiste.php3?id=5693)".

Moliner defines "sal gorda" as follows,
Sal gorda. 1 Sal de cocina, de grandes cristales. 2 Humor ordinario o vulgar.

In Spain "sal gorda" is common, but I agree with aleC, the collocation "escabullirse con sal gorda" doesn't sound idiomatic to me...
