Either you couldn't believe what was patently true (indicative) or a true notion couldn't get its way into your mind (subjunctive):

lo veía [que tenía tantos pisos] pero no podía creerlo (both true)
lo veía pero no podía creer que tuviera tantos pisos (both true, but not in my mind)
