A friend from Jalisco, Mexico says this for the action of crossing one's fingers to hope for a good outcome. Has anyone else heard it used?

Yep. There is also "hacer changuitos". I don't know which one was coined first. :)
- Haz changuitos/chonguitos para que no llueva.
- Estoy haciendo changuitos/chonguitos por ti. (Para que te vaya bien.)

Ah, glad to hear that. I was afraid it might be very localized, since another friend who comes from a neighboring state didn't know it.
At least to my ears, chonguitos (braids in hair) sounds more sensible here than changuitos (little monkeys), but what do I know?

Well, crossed fingers may well convey the image of a monkey holding to a branch. ;)
