At least in Argentina, when a pet or trained animal is lost to its masters they print those typical ads with a photo and basic info, which always includes "responde al nombre de (Puppy)", that means, if you call it (Puppy) the animal will recognize it as something related to itself.

This comes from the fact that only apes can fathom the concept of "my name", that's why we favour expressing the notions as "the animal reacts when it's called (Puppy)".

Is there something equivalent in English? What do the ads usually say?

That reminds me of two anecdotes: an English friend of mine lived here in Tenerife and had Spanish neighbours with a dog. She mentioned this dog to me and claimed that it's name was "ven aquí" :D

The other is an advertisement I saw in a local newspaper in England:

Found: one cat. Answers to the name of "Go away"

:D This construction in Spanish really does sound strange when talking about animals:

And your chickens - what do they call themselves? I doubt whether they call themselves anything, but I call them ....
