Hola buenas

I know this is a greeting which evades the distinction between the tardeor the mañana. I know it's very common in Spain, and I think it's used in Mexico too but I'm not sure. Do you believe this is an international usage? I also assume you would never say hola buenos. Am I correct about that.

I think it's international. Here, it's not the most common (or polite) greeting, but it's heard often.
And you are right, Poli, "buenos" is never used (at least in Mexico).
Instead, you may hear "días" (or "tardes"), but this is mostly used colloquially, in groups of people where there is some kind of trust. :)

En España se usa bastante, de forma coloquial el "Hola, buenas" o "Buenas"...

I have heard buenas, días, y tardes all used individually as informal, general-purpose greetings. They seem to be used with a certain intonation and in certain circumstances. For example, I haven't really heard it when you're directly addressing a person, but I have heard it when you walk into a store and you're not really addressing anyone very personally. It feels similar to walking in someplace and saying "hey" to whoever is there.
