I know there's something wrong with this sentence, but I don't know how to make it right :/ Help?

"Ayer tuve clase de español un trabajo en grupo sobre la capital de España"

Basically, I'm trying to say that I had spanish yesterday and that we worked together in groups about the capital of Spain.. I know it's not right!! :p

Yo diría ...

Ayer, en la clase de español, trabajamos en grupos para aprender algo de la capital de España.

The preterite tense was used because the working had an end.

Trabajamos=we had worked / we worked
Trabajabamos=we had been working/we were working

Tricky field, tenses. Also difficult for Spanish speakers, the english tenses. For example, the distribution going to vs will...lots of rules and at the end of the day a big percentage of sentences would admit both.

All the other translations are fine, but I'll just add one more in an attempt to correct your sentence with the fewest changes possible.
"Ayer tuve clase de español e hicimos un trabajo en grupo sobre la capital de España"
