When some in customer service is especially nice, often (in the spoken Spanish that I know) the customer's response is gracias, muy amable. Is this often the response in places like Argentina and Mexico?

It is in Mexico. If someone treated us nicely, we try to be nice in return. :)

I concur. Gracias joven, muy amable can be heard hundreds of times a day in any plaza or tianguis in Mexico. :)
