People,

I just saw on RTVE, written in the news legend: "Son lo peor de Eapaña".

Wouldn't it be better to say "Son los peores de Eapaña"?

I still have a bit of trouble with grouping various things or people into a collective singular. The legend said "son", then the collective singular "lo".

--------------------------

I also saw "estrategia del victimismo". The word victim doesn't sound very masculine to me.

But I am thinking that the "ismo" suffix only exists in the masculine, and that the suffix "ista" requires the feminine. Is that it?

Thanks in advance.

Dean

Isn't "they are the worst thing that happened to the country" a correct sentence? It includes plural subject "they" and singular "thing".

All words ending with "ismo" are masculine: extremismo, tremendismo, pasatismo, etc.

On the contrary, the ending -ista is invariable:
la tenista, el tenista
la deportista, el deportista
la artista, el artista

with the only exception of "el modisto", because calling a man identified fashion designer "el modista" would have been considered offensive, as they are so darn macho as a general rule. Today it is used "diseñador de moda/s" or "diseñador de indumentaria", so the term modisto only remains to spoil the dictionary.
