Práctica con "para" (Part Three)

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I'm working on trying to learn/understand the differences between the usage of "por" y "para". (See http://forums.tomisimo.org/showthread.php?t=3002 and http://forums.tomisimo.org/showthread.php?t=3011 )

Here are some more sentences that I've written using "para". Please comment, correct, opinionate, or whatever else you'd like to share with me on this topic. Thanks!!

1) Esto foto es para mi madre.
2) El cheque es para el fontanero.
3) Saldré para la iglesia en cuatro horas.
4) Saldremos para la playa al lunes. (¿¿O, "...la playa el lunes" w/o the "a"??)
5) Esta lección es para la próxima semana.
6) ¿Quieres ir conmigo? Me dices para las cinco.
7) Mi programa favorita, CSI, es para los jueves.
8) Tú eres inteligente para un niño mocito. (¿"mocito" = "joven"?)
9) Anoche, me desvelo para mí.
10) Hoy, hace caliente para febrero.

2) El cheque es para el fontanero. :good:
3) Saldré para la iglesia en cuatro horas. :good:
4) Saldremos para la playa el lunes. :good: (¿¿O, "...la playa el lunes" w/o the "a"??) (Yes, it should be "el". :) )
5) Esta lección es para la próxima semana. :good:
6) ¿Quieres ir conmigo? Me dices para las cinco. :good: As you have it now, this means that if they want to go with you, they have to let you know by 5 o'clock.
7) Mi programa favorita, CSI, es para los jueves. :?:I'm not quite sure what you mean with this one.
8) Tú eres inteligente para un niño mocito. :good: (¿"mocito" = "joven"?) You could also use "jovencito" "chiquito" etc. It is also common to say "para ser" in this context. "Eres inteligente para ser un jovencito".= "You're smart for a little guy".
9) Anoche, me desvelo para mí. :?:I'm not quite sure what you mean with this one.
10) Hoy, hace calor para febrero. :good:

#6 - that is exactly what I meant to say! :)
#7 - I was using a website about por & para which said that if you are talking about something is scheduled for a date/time in the future you use "para" and their example sentence was "La cita es para el jueves." Does the same thinking not apply to my program set to air on Thursday?
#8 - these are the kinds of situations where I really, really like the diminutives. ;)
#9 - I was trying to say "I was awake late last night, for me." (Because usually I fall asleep early ... I'm not a night owl!)

#9 - I was going for the "it was late for me" bit ... how do I stress that it may not have been "late" for humanity in general ... but definitely en el mundito de Luanita!

We use dar.

Consider this:

Van a dar la película a las tres de la tarde.
(they) are going to show the movie at 3 in the afternoon.

El jueve dan CSI.

Why we use dar? I do not have the slightest idea. (other than spanish idiotsyncrasy). Maybe Angela, Rusty and David know or might have an idea.

Okay, I think we got away from what I was looking for initially.... help with sentences specifically designed for the use of "para". I greatly appreciate (!!) the grammatical suggestions for entire sentences ... but if you are recommending that I take out the "para", please help me understand WHY. Thanks!

Here are the sentences again, with some of the corrections or notes made or questions asked:

1) Esta foto es para mi madre. :good:
2) El cheque es para el fontanero. :good:
3) Saldré para la iglesia en cuatro horas. :?: (Luis - why is "hacia" better than "'para" here?)

SOOoooo ... I suppose that first of all, I'm looking for "fine tuning" of the ones with ":?:" ... and I'm looking for rewriting of #7 and #9.....

#7) The sample sentence was: "La cita es para el jueves." (The appointment is on Thursday.) This use of "para" is "to indicate when something is due, para indicates dates and times in the future."
** I was thinking that it would be equivalent to say, "My favorite program, CSI, is on Thursday." Why is it wrong to use para for my example, given the sample statement?

#9) The sample sentence was: "Para una tortuga, es muy rápida." (For a turtle, he is very fast.) This use of "para" is when "a standard is used to compare something or someone to differentiate it from others in its group."
** I was looking to say something like, "For me, it was late that I was up last night." I know that the English structure is awkward here, but it gets the idea of what I was trying to say, in the same order as the sample sentence. What is wrong with using "para" here?

4) Saldremos para la playa el lunes. Same as #3.

"Avisas" is style again, but it won't impede understanding.

7) Mi programa favorito, CSI, es para los jueves.
"Mi programa favorito, CSI, lo dan/lo pasan/pasa los jueves"

8) Tú eres inteligente para ser un mocito. Un niño/un chico/tan joven would make more understandable the sentence in Latin America.

9) Anoche, me desvelo para mí.
"Anoche me desvelé, para mi costumbre." (When you go to sleep at 11pm and your usual bedtime is 9pm, for example.)
"Anoche me dormí a las 11. Eso, para mí, es desvelo."

10) Hoy, hace calor para (ser) febrero. :?: (Is it better with or without the "ser"? Is there a slight difference in meaning?)
Correct sentence. There is no difference in meaning. Only what you want to emphasize.


#7) The sample sentence was: "La cita es para el jueves." (The appointment is on Thursday.)
One time appointment. If you had that appointment every Thursday, you would say "tengo cita (todos) los jueves". That is why "para" doesn't apply for CSI.

#9) The sample sentence was: "Para una tortuga, es muy rápida." (For a turtle, he is very fast.)
Turtle example is well replicated for the clever boy sentence.

Malila! Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner. (I know you're not looking for an apology.) I have had a TOTALLY crazy week ... and knew that it would take some thinking and analyzing to work through all of this.

Anyway - your comments are extremely helpful!! Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.

For #6, I wanted to say: "Do you want to come with me? Tell me by 5:00." Is that okay with "para"?

For #9, that also helps a lot. I love your rewrite: "Anoche me dormí a las 11. Eso, para mí, es desvelo." Breaking it down like that helps a lot. Proves (again) what Hernan has been telling me ... to think in short phrases/sentences and try to say those ideas in Spanish.

I think it will work with "para", yes. A bit odd, but correct.


For #9, that also helps a lot. I love your rewrite: "Anoche me dormí a las 11. Eso, para mí, es desvelo." Breaking it down like that helps a lot. Proves (again) what Hernan has been telling me ... to think in short phrases/sentences and try to say those ideas in Spanish.

Making short sentences is a good start. Sometimes one lacks the tools to bound longer thoughts. :)
