This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word (http://daily.tomisimo.org/) for July 27, 2009

vara (feminine noun (la)) — stick, pole, rod, bar, shaft, branch, twig, wand, sucker, switch. Look up vara in the dictionary (http://www.tomisimo.org/dictionary/spanish_english/vara)

La princesa extendió su vara mágica y todo cambió.
The princess extended her magic wand and everything changed.

Una vara es una rama o palo más o menos largo y delgado. Pero para princesas, hadas y magos se usa "varita" (o varita mágica):

Antiguamente una vara era también una medida de longitud.

No encuentro el interruptor de la luz (light switch? [suena divertido]), tengo miedo de tropezarme con el gato. Usa tu vara mágica para iluminar la habitación para que podamos ver!

Yes, I read it, but for that reason, I made the question.

Because

I want to know if wand and pole are the same or at least means the same.

I remember something my Dad used to say when I was little. If there was something I wanted and I kept on asking for it again and again, even if they said no, he would say 'Y dale Jaimito con la varita' meaning something like:' Will she ever stop?'
