Ik looked up compuesta in the dictionary and it said ' dressed up' ?
So I guess this would be to be left dressed up without a fiancé?
w.r.t. the translation you offered:
' To fail to reach your goal'
' To fall short (of reaching your goal)'
w.r.t. the bride being left at the altar - in fact these are used in general not just in this situation in the meaning of being abandoned or let down:
' To be stood up'
' To be left high and dry'.
' To be let down'
