I think perder garra means to lose your touch or to lose you knack, but I'm not sure. Is this a commonly used phrase?
Am I right about what it means?

I haven´t heard it a long time ago, but the meaning is fine.

Yes, the meaning is fine
in a figurative sense it's like a lion wich loses his claws ("perder garra")
or like a boxer who loses his uppercut ("perder el gancho")
used in sports or flirting...
"Según los argentinos, Messi ha perdido su garra..."
"El ha perdido su garra, las chicas ya no se fijan en él"
saludos :D

As in grasp, but it also means you have lost spirit. ie: You are not fighting as fiercely etc..
