First thing that comes to mind, "It is over". Maybe less "colorful" than the original Spanish, but basically giving the idea "that's it" "end of cycle" "no more"... literally, "we run out of what we were giving". It seems to me (I may be wrong, for a change) that it may come from some kind of charitable activity of giving free food to indigents... and then when the food is all eaten up, one cannot keep serving it. Thus the literally "we run out of the food/goodies we were giving" it's used more figurativelly as "no more of the same" "it is now officially over".

Interesting!
It reminds me the other Spanish saying, "Muerto el perro, se acabó la rabia".
Although this may seem to stretch things a bit... it is definitely related.
