When we want to forget sth or forgive sb because of sth they did to us in the past and we were upset with them, we say " pelillos al mar"

Yes, also,
to make up (in the sense of to settle amicably, as differences; as well as to become reconciled, as after a quarrel.
¡pelillos a la mar! = let bygones be bygones!

Random House Unabridged:
let bygones be bygones, to decide to forget past disagreements; become reconciled: Let's let bygones be bygones and be friends again.

(First time I saw the Spanish expression "pelillos a la mar" was reading the most important classics... Asterix, by Gosciny translated by Perich or Víctor Mora... ¡cráneos privilegiados!)

Well, sometimes it happens that our mental "file clerk" is busy with other things... That's why we have dictionaries... and Tomísimo "foreros" to help each other... like good brothers... ;) :)
