@Tarential: Your question about the fish was correct.
Jessica might not have understood it well, unless she actually caught a fish. :D

¿La pregunta de Tarential es correcta?
¿No es ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que cogiste un pez?
Y si la respuesta es sí, ¿alguien me puede explicar la diferencia entonces entre pez y pescado?
Gracias!

For me it would be ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que cogiste/pescaste un pez? Pescado is dead so "cogiste un pescado" to me would mean "held a (dead) fish" as in what you might get at the fishmonger.:)

Jessica April 19, 2010 12:00 PM

?? what's the question? ???

When was the last time you felt left out :(

AngelicaDeAlquezar April 19, 2010 12:13 PM

@Here4good: Ambarina is right, and I guess my use of "pescado" will fall into those "regional differences". :)
"Pez" is certainly used for a living fish, but around here is rather associated to a fish living in its natural habitat. When the fish lives in a fishbowl or in a breeding pond, it's pretty common to call it "pescado".
No encontré la pregunta de Tarential equivocada, porque una vez que lo pescaste, pues ya es "pescado". ;)
My first choice would have been "¿Cuándo fue la última vez que pescaste?" (Adding "un pescado" would be a pleonasm.)
One can say "¿Cuándo fue la última vez que pescaste un atún/una carpa/una trucha/un salmón?" (or in plural "atunes"/"carpas"...)
"Coger/atrapar/agarrar un pescado" makes me rather think about someone using their hands or struggle to grab the fish in a breeding pond, but it can easily be understood as "pescar (un pez)" as well. :)
