@Lou Ann: Many people I know feel their dignity hurt when they're object of sympathy (as if people were telling them they're unable to overcome difficulties by themselves)... they prefer euphemisms of it or more neutral solidarity expressions.

So you see, it's not the same to say "pobre de tí" (poor you) as "te acompaño en tu dolor" (I feel your pain). :)

You're so right! At the time that it happened, I hadn't lost anyone close to me before, so I had no idea what to think. But I have to say that since then, my father has passed away, and the "sympathy" cards were quite comforting because I knew that so many people were thinking of me with care and concern. Anyway - I understand and agree with your points, and always attempt to keep those things in mind when I'm dealing with someone who is in some sort of pain or grief situation....

I've seen this verb used somehow to describe the weather at an event, e.g. espero que el tiempo nos acompañe. Might not be quite right, but something like that!

You're correct. And it means that hopefully the weather will be nice.
