In Mexico I'm pretty sure this would be a "patio" even if it's on the second floor.

Por acá, un balcón es más estrecho que una terraza. Y yo llamaría también "terraza" a la de la foto de pjt... un balcón necesariamente tendría que dar directo a la calle, no a otro edificio. :thinking:

@David: Más bien lo llamaríamos "zotehuela". ;)
Yo creo que un patio es más abierto y se encuentra en la planta baja.
