Buscar tres pies al gato - Page 2

DRAE gives, (under "pie)
buscarle tres, o cinco, pies al gato. 1. locs. verbs. Buscar soluciones o razones faltas de fundamento o que no tienen sentido.
2. locs. verbs. coloqs. Empeñarse en cosas que pueden acarrear daño.

Rusty, in the Idioms section gives, "To complicate things unnecessarily" which matches as well with what Moliner says.

Jwpaine input is valid (even with the version of 5 feet...)

The sense of "split hairs" and "nitpick" is also correct, depending the contexts, but it is, no doubt one of the senses of the Spanish expression.

Pero, no hay que buscarle más pies al gato que los que tiene, pues aquí no hay gato encerrado...

En Argentina decimos "buscarle la quinta pata al gato" y significa "buscar problemas o dificultades donde no los hay"
