Felicidades - Page 3

Hey, that was a nice 'encapsulation', instead of staying 2 solid hours watching the match, one can get the gist, the essence, just right there...:lol::lol:
(My only point of 'critique' is the missing karate-kick... reference... Or was it taekwondo?) :whistling:

I mean, I eat crow on this one. O me como mis palabras... o esto, :footinmouth:.
En cualquier caso, vaya patadón. :)

Yes, I did wonder about the apostrophe. I couldn't decide what the direct object of 'get' was. Do you get sleep in both cases, or do you get three or four hours in one? I then decided the 'three to four hours' was adjectival, with sleep always the direct object of 'get'.

Even I saw that!

I checked my instinct by dropping the time to one hour: I would certainly say

I would like to get more than an hour's uninterrupted sleep

rather than

I would like to get more than an hour uninterrupted sleep.

Yes, the former is certainly correct. But I might also say the second, without being sure whether it is ungrammatical.:thinking:

More importantly, is life too short to bother about such niceties?:thinking:

I think the apostrophe comes from this type of expansion:
"I would like to get an hour's worth of sleep"
= "I would like to get an hour's sleep"

Controversially, while "I would like to get more than an hour sleep" sounds ok to my ears, removing the unnecessary "more than" ends up with this:
"I would like to get an hour sleep"

I believe it is obvious in the second example that it should be changed to "I would like to get an hour of sleep". The only conclusion I can reach is that it must either be "hour of sleep" or "hour's sleep" but never "hour sleep". Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong about my reasoning though.

@Crotalito, ¿quién es "el niño"?

Jejeje I'm the kid:sad:

I don't want to say this, but I lost the game the orange team couldn't win the game against Spain.

JPablo July 18, 2010 06:13 AM

Yes, mainly because the Spanish were playing and the Orange were trying to stop plays... the creativity and skill won over the brute force... and the stoppers... (although Casillas did more than one phenomenal stop/save too...) :)

CrOtALiTo July 18, 2010 11:03 AM

Yes the team Spain is good.

But I don't agree with you Holland had more stopped than Spain although they were murdered for the Spain team.

JPablo July 19, 2010 02:33 AM

Hi, CrOtALiTo...
I am not quite getting what you mean... You don't agree Holland was more defensive, and less attacking?

They were defensive, i.e., they did some good and dangerous counter attacks, but that's about it...

Switzerland won against Spain in the first game because a smart strategy, becoming a total turtle, and then exploding in few counter-attacks... In one of them they were lucky enough to score. It is obvious that the other teams against Spain took a defensive stand, and that is one of the reasons Spain goals were so limited...

Argentina was doing well as long as they were attacking and their (weak) defense was not exposed... The moment they played against Germany, that weak defense was exposed, and against a good defense, like Germany had, the excellent strikers Argentina had (Messi, Higuaín...) couldn't do much about it...

Spain has a good defense, and maybe the best guys as middlefielders, ie., Xavi. Yet, if they are trying to open the defense of the opponent, you can catch Puyol, (he is now 32, I believe) off guard (I believe it happened a couple of times) and Casillas had to be the heroe, saving the day. If Casillas had allowed one or two of these clear possibilities of goal for Holland, the score could have been 1 or 2 zero to Holland. Yet, Casillas is one of the best, if not the best of goalkeepers in this planet, and that showed clearly on that game... which otherwise was technically dominated by Spain.

I could say that on the defeat against Switzerland, Spain dominated as well, but in soccer it is not only a matter of "dominating", you have to be effective too... like Villa was along the whole tournament. Torres ("el Niño") was criticized for his lack of scoring ability, yet Villa was happy to have him on the other side... and while he did not score a single goal, was a very important element in the Spanish overall tournament. Sure, Pedro was also excellent against Germany (although he missed a very obvious opportunity to pass the ball to Torres and score an easy 2-0) but overall he was just great... And of course Iniesta was the man of the final... in the same way Puyol was the man for the semifinal... At any rate, I believe Holland did a very good World Cup, and played very well all along... but I was disappointed at the way they played in the final... :soccer: :soccer: :soccer:

CrOtALiTo July 19, 2010 10:29 AM

Yes that!

JPablo July 20, 2010 03:01 AM

Okay, then... let's see now what happens next year in the Spanish "La Liga" (last year was a fierce contest until the end between Barça and Real Madrid... with Barça winning...) (By the way, 7 of the guys playing with the Spanish National Selection were from Barça...) (Barça = Fútbol Club Barcelona)
And we will see in 2012 what happens in the Eurocup... The average age of the Spanish team is 26, so even if it goes to 28 in two years and/or 30 for the next World Cup in Brazil... they have 'congealed' or 'solidified' if you wish, such an excellent team work and coordination, that again, I'd think they are going to be difficult to beat... Of course, many things can happen in 2 and 4 years... but my think is that they will consolidate the good form... (I hope so!) :)

CrOtALiTo July 20, 2010 07:42 PM

Yes I hope that for that year the glory coming up to me.

I agree with your commentary.
