Vela

vela -feminine noun (la), candle. Look up vela in the dictionary Es bueno tener unas velas y cerillos en casa por si se va la luz. It's good to have some candles and matches at home in case the power goes out. |

Velar y velatorio vienen de vigilar, no de vela. Pero en todos los velatorios (velorios en Argentina) se vela un cadáver, y suele haber velas. Si velar significa vigilar, ¿es que puede marcharse el cadáver?

Es la primera vez que oí la palabra velatorio (parece un laboratorio donde producen nuevos tipos de velas, tal vez algunos que hielen a fresa artificial:D). Velorio se usa en latinoamerica--no solo Argentina. En inglés velatorio es candle light vigil. ¿Piensas tener uno para el difunto Jaimito?

Conozco velorio por la literatura de Cortázar. No creo que se pueda extender a toda Sudamérica. Es demasiado grande como para pensar que comparten una sola forma para velatorio /velorio / ...
