I think I figured out why I like this forum so much. It's the same reason why I like the science/astronomy forum I frequent. Both places attract people who are inquisitive and have a desire to learn.

In person, when many of my friends hear I'm trying to better my Spanish, I kind of get these "Why in the world would you do that?!" looks. I'm the kind of person who just loves to learn; I don't need a reason. And, it seems, the other users here are the same way.

I mean, I figure it's never bad to learn something new, right? Anyway, just a random thought before I head off to a work meeting. I'll try to post this again in Spanish when I have the time to do so.

I've written about this before, but learning Spanish will definitely improve you English vocabulary. I think a lot of English speakers have some unconscious arrogance about our language. Somewhere in their minds they think they(meaning foreign-language speakers) have to learn English, because English rules, and that we have no need to learn other languages. Besides arrogance, there is some truth
to it. English(though often rudementary) is spoken all over the world. English-only people miss out on a lot with that attitude.

¿Quién? ¿Mi? Porque, como dije, no tuve la tiempo. Tuve trabajar que necesití hacer.

Pero mi hecho estuvo que es buen cuando alguien quiere estudiar algo; Español, ciencia, historia, ó algo. A mi me gusta personas quien es inquisitiva, y me gusta estoy cerca de las personas.

The arrogance is not only felt on the side of English speakers.

It happens in all of the countries.

It happens to all foreigners.

There should be a country for foreigners... :D

Creo que en unos paises nórdicos como Holanda no tienen esa arrogancia. Hay otros paises tambien. Conozco un uzbekistani que habla ruso, uzbek, inglés, turko, hebreo y es un barbero. Aquí si un anglo como yo habla un otro idioma es hito grande, pero en otras culturas no es nada especial.

I don't know what is "my point". Do you mean "my point of view"?, that would mean "mi punto de vista", "mi punto" is not said. Or now I don't figure out an example :thinking:

"El hecho" is "the fact", I think that it's also used in English.

I don't think that it depends on the countries, but on the persons. I meet German people who speak several languages. But there are places here in Spain "occupied" by Germans (or English), and everything is written in German in that places, you go there and you don't understand anything, and they don't speak Spanish at all. Such things shouldn't be allowed, I think,

It may not have a literal translation then. In English, a spoken / written "point" means it's the issue that you intended to make.

For instance, if I say "I always buy strawberries this time of year. They cost three times more this year than last year. I don't eat peaches, but my brother says they've also gotten more expensive."

My "point" is not that I like strawberries but not peaches, the "point"is that the price of fruit went up.

My point was = Lo que quería decir era que... / La idea era que...

"El punto era" can be said, but I guess only in Mexico, where English expressions are literally transported to Spanish and widely used like that. :)

Si ¡Es verdad! Aquí en Estados Unidos ellos pienan que el mundo gire por ellos. Mayoria de ellos creen ellos son el centro del mundo:( Me siento mal por ellos

Es bueno que soy más interesado en la idoma Español de Mexico, ¿No? :)
