¡Estoy mirando una película en español con subtítulos y hay muchos "se"!
Nearly every sentense has "se" in it, apparently for no other reason then to confuse me:lol::lol:


Esta mujer se ha vuelto loca (this woman has gone crazy?)
Pero se me murió hace un año (But he died one year ago?)
Cálmese, quédese aquí (Calmdown, stay here???)
Déjaselo cortito que es más práctico y más cómodo (Let it be cut is more practical and easy??(they were talking about cutting someones hair)
Se lo dejaremos (We should let/leave it)

Bobjenkins, has topado con uno de los peores quebraderos de cabeza de los estudiantes de español (incluso para nosotros cuando los tenemos que estudiar...). Te voy a hacer un pequeño resumen (lo he tenido que mirar, que no me lo sé de memoria ;) ). Te lo pongo en español porque me resulta más fácil, no sé si lo sabría traducir bien, espero que lo entiendas. Usos del "se":

- Oraciones pasiva refleja: el pintor pintó la fachada -> Se pintó la fachada.
- Oraciones impersonales (sin sujeto): se dice, se habla, se comenta, se rumorea...
- Pronombre personal átono en función de OI: se nos ha estropeado la nevera.
- Con verbos pronominales (se construyen con "se"): acordarse, olvidarse, ...
- Valor aspectual (dativo de interés o dativo ético): añade un matiz aspectual a la acción, de acción concluida o de inicio de la acción: María (se) comió un pastel.
- Pronombre reflexivo o recíproco: El gato se lava; Los niños se han peleado.
- OI de tercera persona: Le di un regalo a mi hermana -> Se (a ella) lo di

"Se" puede significar muchas cosas :)

Dudaban que fuera verdad que yo me hubiese vuelto al pueblo (aquí sin "se"). Podrías decir: No se creían que hubiera vuelto al pueblo (valor aspectual, se puede eliminar el "se": no creían que hubiera vuelto al pueblo):)

Después de mirar un poco películas en española realizé que se use el verbo HABER mucho en español:)

After watching a few spanish movies I realized that HABER is used so much!

I could have never imagined. As people in general do not pay much attention to those details. :)

It seems logical that the helping verb haber would be used as much as the helping verb have. :rolleyes:

Me gusta esta discusión. Yo tengo la misma problema con "se". Muchas veces no entiendo como "se" se usa. (¿Usé "se" correctamente allí?)

Entonces, yo entiendo muchos lo que escribiste, Irmamar. Pero no entiendo esta oración: "se nos ha estropeado la nevera". Yo sé que "estropear" significa "broken" y "nevera" significa "refrigerator", pero no entiendo como la oración entera significa. Ayudame, por favor.

I'm not irmamar, and she will certainly explain more clearly some things, but this sentence intends to say "our refrigerator has broken"... If I'm not mistaken, it would be like "the refrigerator has broken on us".

Btw... Mexican sentence would have been "se nos descompuso el refrigerador". :D

About 20+ years ago (Que horror!! :eek:) I took Spanish in college. But I didn't learn/remember much ... that's a long story (which I've told here on the forums previously ... ). I met some Latin Americans this past October who have since become close friends. (Thus, my upcoming trip to Uruguay and Peru.) Being around them and around their families motivated me to start learning Spanish again. I started from scratch in October. I'm having a LOT more fun this time around! :)

Maliila - why "el mismo problema"? Doesn't "mismo" modify "problema"? ACK! These masculine/feminine agreements are going to be the end of me!!

Let me propose "I understand much of what ("lo") you wrote" as a translation.

As a provisional answer, while a more systematic explanation is given by more experienced members:

When "lo" is normally translated as "what", it goes before the verb.

Pienso en lo que dijiste esta mañana.
I'm thinking about what you said this morning.

No escuché lo que dijo.
I didn't hear what he/she said.


When "lo" is normally translated as "it", it's incorporated to the verb.

Say it!
¡Dilo!

No me lo preguntó.
He didn't ask me about it.


@Lou Ann: Problema, tema, etc., are words that end in "a" but are masculine. El problema, el tema... :)

BAH! I forgot about those words. DOH! Like "foto" is feminine. :) (suspiro......)

The phrase lo que means that which. So, a literal translation of the sentence is: I understand much of that which you wrote. In colloquial English, we say what instead of that which: I understand most of what you wrote. (I also threw in the more colloquial most instead of much.)

The word lo is also a direct object pronoun. It is never used as a subject pronoun, meaning it (as you have used it in several of your posts). The subject pronoun it is often omitted in Spanish (just like the other subject pronouns). The subject pronoun for it is él/ella/ello.

Problema is a masculine noun, even though it ends in a.

Gracias, si no escribes en español por que tienes miedo que tu español es mal, entonces tú no aprender tan rapidamente, pero si tú escribes en español todo el tiempo tú aprenderás muy rapidamente:):):)
