Curious, what are pet names in Spanish? In the US we call our spouse, girlfriend or fiance pet names such as: Dear, darling, honey, sweety and baby just to name a few. This does not mean a dog or a cats name.

I would also like the answer to this question. Please also include close friends....

It's difficult to think of a good translation: apodos, apelativos cariñosos... :thinking: Some examples: cariño, mi vida, cielo.

Maria - would you put those in context, please? Who would I call "apodos"? My mom? Could I address an email to a close same-gender friend "Carino Susan...."? I probably would only call my spouse "mi vida", right? "Cielo" is a pet name?

So instead of calling my wife by her name, Jennifer, I most often call her the loving nick name, baby.

my dad doesn't call my mom that. but they are Chinese sooo :P

Well there are other terms that I call her but they aren't loving but said in anger. It would be cool to hear those in espñol as well but I think the admins do not like vulgar talk.

You would start an email to a friend saying: Querida Susan.
You wouldn't call your mother cariño, cielo... But a mother would use those words when talking to her kids.
Mi vida can be used for your husband or your kids.
Some people also use 'cari' for their spouses.

In Chile we also use, perrita/o, flaquita/o, gordita/o etc...

It doesn't matter if the last two are true. Flaco=slim gordo=fat :)
