Translation help.
I'm new, so I'm terribly sorry if this is in the wrong section.
This was an assignment for my Spanish II class. The prompt was: Describe what you were like as a child. How did you behave? What was your personality like? My answer: De pequeno, yo era bien educado y yo era obediente tambien. Would this be correct? And lastly: Tell when you started to do two activities. Does anyone know how to translate "I started to build blocks and ride my tricycle at the age of 5" into spanish? Much appreciation and thanks. |
Your first answer is fine, but you have to insert the right Spanish characters. Here, you can do it using the dropdown accent menu in the writing box.
As for your second sentence, try your own, without an online translator and we can provide hints, because we cannot do your homework for you. Thread moved. |
Okay, thank you.
Prompt: Tell when you started to do two activities. Cuando tenia dos anos yo caminar y montar en triciclo. I'm trying to say "When I was two years old, i started to walk and ride the tricycle" Would this be correct? Thanks... I have to try and use Tenia in my sentences. |
The conjugated verb tenía (note the accent) is correctly used. You're using the imperfect tense to 'set the stage' for another event that happened. The other event you're talking about is 'started (to walk and to ride ...)'. This event started and ended in the past, so the verb needs to be conjugated in the preterite tense.
You started the sentence out right, but you didn't use the verb 'started' at all. If you need help trying to find which verb to use, let us know. The word 'years' in Spanish is spelled with the letter ñ. (As already mentioned above, all the special characters you'll need to type in Spanish can be found in the 'Accents' drop-down menu found just above where you type.) When you add the verb 'started', also take note that it is followed by a preposition when it is followed by an infinitive (caminar). |
Okay, okay, hows this:
Cuando tenía dos años, yo empezé caminé y monté en(?) triciclo. Don't know about that "en" there... thank you! |

Empezar is always followed by a preposition when an infinitive follows it. (I wrote that infinitive in my previous post.) The preposition immediately precedes the infinitive. You're using two infinitives in your sentence, so the preposition must immediately precede both of them. |
Cuando tenía dos años, (yo) empezé a caminar y montar en triciclo.

@Nikore: "Empecé". Words derivated from a word with a "z" change to "c" with vowels "e" and "i".
empiezo empezamos empecé tropiezo tropecé tropezaba pez peces lanza lancé |
