I think it refers to the idea that if you are "here" you are in the real world and have contact with reality. If you are "not here" it means you are "gone" for various reasons: you could be drunk, or drugged, or insane.

I have been told that the lyrics of popular music are not intended to be analyzed deeply. :)

Perikles has explained "gone". "Plain" can mean a lot of things, but in this context the general idea is "completely", "sin matices".
