Dar miedo

I have to fill in the sentance : a John___daba mucho miedo hablar en público. I have a feeling that dar miedo works like the verbs gustar doler etc, which would mean that it was 'le'. But when I look up dar is a transitive verb, so I'm a little confused. Could someone tell me what to do and why?

Tks

Dar is a transitive verb, yes. And it takes both an indirect and a direct object. The direct object is miedo. The indirect object is John. That's why the indirect object pronoun le is needed.

Hey, Rasmus! Welcome to the forum. John is receiving the fear, which makes him the indirect object of the action of the verb "dar". The direct object of the action of "dar" is the fear itself.
