Is the subject pronoun 'yo' necessary in this sentence?

"Este fin de semana, quiero quedarme en casa y leer una novela. Tengo muchos libros, pero no tengo suficiente tiempo para leer todos. Quiero leer "Un Pasaje a la India" de E.M Forster. Yo también quiero pasar tiempo con mi familia. Me gusta ver telenovelas estadounidenses con mi madre y mi hermano. Prefiero leer a ver telenovelas, pero telenovelas son más relajantes."

Is the 'yo' in red necessary? Can I remove it from my sentence?

The verb ending conveys who the subject is, in this case, so no, it isn't necessary to include the subject pronoun. The only reason you would want to repeat the first-person subject pronoun in the present tense is if you're trying to be emphatic.

You do not need to use "yo" in that sentence. "Yo" is already the clearly established topic of the discourse. You would need a subject pronoun if you were changing topics.

One other comment: You said: "telenovelas son más relajantes". Much better to say: "Las telenovelas son mucho más relajantes".
