No dejar meter baza a

No dejar meter baza a

Means no to let him/her get a word in edgewise.

Is this an internationally understood phrase, or Spain-specific?

Not heard in Mexico.

Thank for the information. Is there a figurative term for this in Mexico?

"no meter baza" and "no dejar meter baza" are normal terms in Argentina, though you have to have a "medium size" lexicon to know it and use it.

You can say "no le dejó decir pío", "no le dejó decir ni mu", or "no le dejó abrir la boca".

Common in SPain too.

No lo dejaron ni hablar.
No pudo decir ni pío.
Nadie le pidió su opinión. (Meaning rather that they didn't even let him say a word.)

"Meter la/su cuchara" is a related expression in the sense of someone who intervenes or expresses an opinion on something. => No lo dejaron meter su cuchara.

En Chile "(no) meter Baza = (no) meter cuchara" y se usan las dos.
