Hello from Michigan
I found this site from surfing the web. My daughter is 4yrs old and starting to learn spanish, this site has helped me teach her thank you. I want her to become bilingual. Unfortunatley I'm not, so I'm learning as she learns. Because of this I come to the site daily to learn. Don't know what else to say.
Thanks, |
Hi there Duke. It's a good goal you have of teaching your 4-year-old Spanish while she's young. Linguists are pretty much in agreement that while a child is young (generally before about 10 or 11 yrs old) they can learn a foreign language perfectly. In other words they can learn it as another native language, since their mind is adapted to language learning. Once a person passes about 10, 11, or 12 years of age, it becomes much more difficult to learn a language, and even if you do learn it, you won't havenative fluency.
So... keep at it. You can learn along with your daughter. |
Another thing you could try that would be really good is get some tv programs in Spanish. Take whatever shows she likes to watch, for example Lazy Town and get it dubbed in Spanish. That way she can watch what is going on and from that, her mind (remember-- it's adapted specially to language learning at this point) will deduce what the words/phrases mean from the characters' actions. That can be a good learning tool for young children.

I agree with David. iTunes has free episodes of Sesame Street in Spanish that you can watch on your computer or video iPod. Once, I watched an episode and wrote down every Spanish word I recognized - my paper was filled up. It's a great tool. :)
Y bienvenidos a tomisimo! ~ Alejandra |
