I really was! Spent 3 months busing around Ecuador and had a great time. So if I want to mention to someone that I was in Ecuador in April cual es mejor?

I know it's a pretérit vs. imperfecto case. The on-line translators at SpanishDict are split, 2 for estaba and 1 for estuve.

Estuve, no doubt.

Though imperfect/preterit is much more wide than that, you may think of imperfect as giving contextual information.

Estuve en Ecuador durante abril. (months without capital letters)
Estaba en Ecuador en abril cuando pasó esto. (Where you was when something happened)
