Cama

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for May 21, 2008

cama -feminine noun (la), bed. Look up cama in the dictionary

Los que hacen trucos de magia a veces se acuestan en camas de clavos o carbones encendidos.
People who do magic tricks sometimes lay down on a bed of nails or a bed of fire.

There are different types of bed:
-sofá cama
-cama nido
-literas
-cama de matrimonio.
And some expressions with cama:
-guardar cama
-saltar de la cama/ tirarse de la cama
- un refrán: la cama, el fuego y el amor nunca te dirán vete a tu labor.
A synonym for cama is lecho.
A baby sleeps in a moisés when he's tiny and then in a cuna.
SLEEP TIGHT = QUE DUERMAS BIEN Y SUEÑES CON LOS ANGELITOS

sofá cama = hideaway
cama nido ?
litera = bunkbed
cama de matrimonio = queen bed
guardar cama ?
cuna = crib

Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite; and if they do, grab a shoe and beat 'em 'till they're black and blue.

What does the refrán mean? la cama, el fuego y el amor nunca te dirán vete a tu labor

Cama nido is a trundle bed,is hideaway the same as sofa-bed?
Funny, but instead of queen bed, over here it is king(-sized) bed.
Guardar cama means to be bedridden (maybe a bit less dramatic)
My version of sleep tight is not as much fun as yours, it's simply:
Sleep tight,
don't let the bed bugs bite,
see you in the morning light.
The meaning of the proverb is that it is difficult to say no to love or to a good nap. I don't understand the bit about the fire.
And something I forgot before: cama con dosel ( four-poster bed)
One more thing: have you ever heard: el que con niños se acuesta, "mojao" se levanta?

A trundle bed or a sofa bed can also be called a hideaway or hideaway bed. Hideaway is also more general in that it encompasses other unique designs, such as this bed that folds up against the wall:

As far as bed sizes go, you have (from smallest to largest): single bed, double bed, queen(-size) bed, king(-size) bed, California king (longer than a king). At least that's the way it is in the US of A.

guardar cama = to stay in bed
estar encamado = to be bedridden

el que con niños se acuesta, "mojao" se levanta <= never heard that :)

A workmate of mine has just arrived, earlier than usual. I said:
-¡qué pronto llegas, Arturi
And he answered:
-Me he caído de la cama.
