Lio y Rollo.

Entre lio y rollo, siempre me lio.
Please, what are the uses of each one?

Iris May 22, 2008 03:23 PM

- Esto es un lío. No entiendo nada. ¿Me lo puedes explicar mejor?
- Vaya rollo. Me aburro mucho. Vamos a hacer otra cosa.
I hope these examples will help a bit.

Are they used in the same way in all the Spanish speaking countries?

Probably not exactly.

lío = trouble, problem, mess, confusion, mixup

rollo = thing, affair, activity, business; [lengthy, boring, uninteresting, or tedious speech, talk, lecture, story, or sermon etc]

¡Qué lío!, would then mean: What a mess/confusion/mixup!
¡Qué rollo!, How boring/uniteresting!

Tomisimo May 22, 2008 04:39 PM

There are lots of possible translations, but yes,
¡Qué lío! = What a mess!
For rollo, there are lots of possible translations.
¡Qué rollo!
How boring!
What an involved process!
What a tedious, boring job!

etc.

-Esos dos tienen un lío, ¿no ves cómo se miran?
-¿Qué, que están liados?
-Lo que yo te diga, ésos tienen un rollo.

(Typical Madrilenian).

Iris May 23, 2008 01:22 PM

Your examples are to die for. Well, maybe that's an overstatement, but you know what I mean...:)

Imagina que significa que los dos están vinculados. ¿Vinculado en algún delito

What Alfonso means is that they are having a fling.

Alfonso May 23, 2008 01:57 PM

-Me he enrollado con una tía que está como un queso.
-Menos lobos, caperucita.
-Que sí, tío, que me la he...

(Typical madrilenian macho).

Iris May 23, 2008 02:00 PM

Typical macho man. Madrileño, catalán... doesn't make a difference I would say.

Alfonso May 23, 2008 02:03 PM

Typical Spanish macho?

Iris May 23, 2008 02:05 PM

Universal?
And you forgot to offer the English speakers an exercise. Who can finish Alfonso's sentence? (Last example, last sentence):D
-Que sí, que me la he...

Rusty May 23, 2008 02:19 PM

-Que sí, tío, que me la he ...
... comido.

Alfonso May 23, 2008 02:23 PM

Jajajaja, sí hombre, la rosquilla. You are so naif, Rusty! ;)

This is where I get confused...
Si tienen un lío, that´s like saying, they have a problem.
Si tienen un rollo, I suppose means that they are having an affair.:?:
