Do you say a little black number in the States?

Yes, if it's already understood that you're refering to a dress, it's OK to say something like "How about that little black number?"

Could a man's suit also be called a "vestido", or is that different?

Vestido is only for women, or men who are interested in cross-dressing.

A man's suit would be a traje. Which can also mean costume.

Or swimming trunks.

We usually say bañador for swimming trunks (and for swimming suit). The whole word is traje de baño, but it sounds too formal.
