Vestir

Vestir

Hi all, could you please share your knowledge of vestir with me.

As far as I understand you use vestir to mean 'dress' as in dressing someone else but vestirse to mean to dress yourself.

But what I'm really interested in is using vestir to mean 'wear'.

Sometimes I see it used with de and other times not - what's the story with that? Is the de optional? needed?

Vistió un traje. He wore a suit. looks ok to me but what do I know lol

should it be - vistió de un traje.

or how about 'en' does that work sometimes too?

All comments gratefully accepted.

Se puso un traje
llevaba traje
llevaba un traje así y asá
Vestía un traje así y asá (description of that suit)
Vestía de traje (general style of clothing)

Nice, thanks. :)

And just to clarify

- vistió un traje - he wore a suit,

- vestía un traje - he was wearing a suit

but se vistió un traje = he put on a suit,

cierto?

Thanks, but can't vestirse mean 'to get dressed'? so why can't se vistió un traje work for he put a suit on, he got dress in a suit - I realize that se puso works too but just wondering if it could be another option.

"Vestirse" doesn't take a direct object.

"Se vistió un traje negro" sounds too awkward. I've seen it used in some literary texts, but it sounds plain wrong for some ears (mine included).

I dressed in trousers and a shirt.
· Me puse un pantalón y una camisa.
I put on trousers and a shirt.

· Juan siempre se viste de negro.
Juan is always dressed in black.
· Juan siempre se pone ropa negra.
Juan always wears black clothes.

Maria dressed as a bride for the costume party.

Maria wore a wedding dress for the costume party.

Everyone was full dressed for going to the opera.
Everyone wore formal clothing for going to the opera.
