Riesgo

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for May 31, 2008

riesgo -masculine noun (el), risk. Look up riesgo in the dictionary

Es mejor no correr riesgos cuando se pueden evitar.
It's better not to run risks when they can be avoided.

"It's better not to take risks when they can be avoided" sounds better to my ears.
I run the risk of being the only one with that opinion, however, even though this is a widely used phrase in American English. I've seen correr riesgos translated both ways.

A related expression: extreme sports are deportes de riesgo.

I actually thought of that Rusty, when I was writing that one. To me, take/run a risk is pretty much interchangeable. But now that I stop and think about it, what you say would be the more common usage I think.

María, creo que he escuchado deportes extremos pero quizá es por la influencia del inglés. En todo caso, gracias por decir eso porque no había visto deportes de riesgo antes y seguramente es la forma correcta de decirlo. :) Thank you!
