Invigilate is a new word for me. The way you used it is chiefly British.
Here, we would probably use oversee, watch over, keep watch, or baby-sit. The last one is more colloquial, but gets the point across quite well. You're there to make sure nobody's cheating. There would be no need to do so if all were mature enough, hence the term baby-sitting.
