Derivar en

Las protestas en Venezuela derivan en un derramamiento de sangre

This confuses me. I think it means : I think it means that the protests
in Venezuela turned into a blood bath, but it doen't read that way.

Can derivar en mean to become?

The protests ... result in ...
The protests ... give rise to ...
The protests ... lead to ...

I agree with all the above.
Just another additional usage
(From Oxford)
b (cambiar de dirección) derivar HACIA/EN algo: una charla que derivó en discusión = a chat which degenerated into o turned into o became an argument;
nuestra amistad derivaba hacia el odio = our friendship was turning
to
hatred
