Soplar

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for July 11, 2008

soplar - verb - to blow, blow off, blow on, blow away, blow up, blow out. Look up soplar in the dictionary

Cuando el viento empieza a soplar me siento refrescado.
When the wind starts blowing I feel refreshed.

Se metió porque le soplaron la clave.

  • Ése sopla un huevo.
  • That guy drinks a lot
But I used a pair of slang expressions in the Spanish sentence, so I don't think the English one is a good translation.

That guy drinks a lot is perfect English, but it isn't an idiom.
A good dicho would be: That guy drinks like a fish./ That guy drinks like a sponge.

JRR Tolkien: Egidio, granjero de Ham / Farmer Giles of Ham
"Next market day he got enough free drink to float a boat: that is to say, he nearly had his fill, and came home singing old heroic songs."

"bebió la suficiente para poner a flote una barca pequeña."
