sorteo - masculine noun (el) - drawing, raffle, toss, draw. Look up sorteo in the dictionary

Si gano el sorteo, voy a ir de vacaciones a Hawaii.
If I win the drawing, I'm going to go to Hawaii on vacation.

Sorteo = drawing/lottery

but

Lottery = lotería

I think of sorteo more as a drawing lottery but not a regular lottery.......is this off base?

No, I think you're right on Elaina. Sorteo = raffle/drawing, lottery = lotería.
