Can we use "que" instead of "lo que" here? And why do we use "lo que" here?

Your structure is "de que". "Los estudiantes" is independent from that "que".

Do you mind if I try to translate into English because I'm not sure on "de que?"

I don't think you can do away with the "de" in that particular example.

Why? Others will be able to tell you about that, even laepelba knows more grammar than I do.
